Anesthesia & Pain Control
Anesthesia Options and Patient Guidelines for Oral Surgery
When scheduling oral surgery, patients are offered various anesthesia options to ensure comfort and reduce pain and anxiety during the procedure. Depending on co-existing medical conditions and the nature of the procedure to be done, options for treatment may include local anesthesia, nitrous oxide, or intravenous (IV) sedation.
- Local Anesthesia: Treatment with local anesthesia allows the patient to remain awake and aware without feeling pain during the procedure. Administered directly to the site of the surgery, local anesthesia numbs the area, and the surgery is completed pain-free. With local anesthesia there is no requirement to fast or arrange transportation.
- Nitrous Oxide: Often referred to as “laughing gas,” nitrous oxide is inhaled through a mask. It helps to relax patients, reducing anxiety while maintaining consciousness. The effects wear off quickly once the mask is removed, allowing patients to recover swiftly.
- Intravenous (IV) Sedation: IV sedation involves administering sedative drugs through a vein, allowing the patient to enter a state of deep relaxation. It is commonly recommended for more complex or lengthy procedures. Due to the sedative effects, patients will need to adhere to strict pre-operative guidelines:
– NPO Status: Patients must refrain from eating or drinking (including water) for at least 8 hours before their surgery. This fasting state is crucial to prevent risks such as aspiration, where food or liquid enters into the lungs under anesthesia.
– Post-Procedure Transportation: As IV sedation impairs cognitive and motor functions, it is mandatory for patients to arrange a ride home. Driving or operating machinery is not advisable for at least 24 hours following sedation.
Recovery Room Facilities
Our office is equipped with a dedicated recovery room, where patients are closely monitored by healthcare professionals as they regain consciousness and recover from the effects of anesthesia. The recovery room is designed to ensure safety and comfort, providing a calm environment for patients to rest until they are ready to be discharged with their designated driver.
These guidelines are designed to ensure the safety and efficacy of the anesthesia and the overall success of your surgical experience. Our team is committed to providing detailed pre-operative instructions and supportive post-operative care tailored to the needs of each patient.
